The Design

Nīlapadma — meaning “the blue lotus” — is a ring built on the meeting of two of the most resonant elements in Indian ornamental tradition: lapis lazuli and the lotus. The stone is a large oval cabochon of deep royal blue lapis lazuli — opaque, dense, the colour of the night sky before full dark — its surface carved directly with a full floral relief: eight elongated petals radiating outward from a raised central point, each petal precisely defined, the carving deep enough to catch shadow in its recesses and create a three-dimensional sculptural quality on the face of the stone. The carving is worked entirely into the lapis itself, making each stone a unique hand-carved object rather than a standard cabochon.
