The Design

Tālapatramani — meaning “the palmyra leaf jewel” — takes its name from the stud top: a large cast gold fan in the form of a spread palmyra palm leaf — multiple deep-ribbed lobes fanning upward and outward from a single flat base, each rib sharply defined, the silhouette wide and structured like an open palm frond. The palmyra leaf is one of the most ancient and utilitarian forms in Indian botanical tradition, here translated into jewellery as a bold, high-relief sculptural stud that sits firmly against the ear and frames the face with a strong upward-spreading architecture. The stud post sits behind, making the full fan leaf the visible element at the ear.

From the base of the palmyra fan, a short link drops to a large gold filigree teardrop frame in intricate jali scrollwork — open, airy, and densely patterned with curling volutes — at the centre of which a carnelian teardrop cabochon is set in a plain raised inner bezel. The carnelian is a deep warm red-orange, its surface smooth and highly polished, its colour complementing the warm gold of the filigree frame.
